Laura Onstot's journey begins with a group therapy session where a therapist shares a piece of advice that resonates deeply: "You can do anything, but not everything." This wisdom brings a sense of relief and validation to Laura, who has struggled with the constant pressure of perfectionism, embodied by a critical inner voice she has named "Shitty Daria". The voice's demand for flawlessness often leaves her feeling overwhelmed and inadequate, especially in her role as a mother, where the list of "shoulds" is seemingly endless.
With the newfound perspective, Laura decides to reassess her priorities and embrace the idea that choices must be made, and not all tasks can be accomplished. The mantra, "You can do anything, but not everything," helps her to reframe her self-perceived shortcomings as intentional decisions. This shift allows her to let go of the guilt associated with not being able to do everything and focus on choosing her "anything". She realizes the importance of deciding what truly matters to her and being selective about where to invest her limited time and energy.
In making these changes, Laura chooses to raise her daughters in a nurturing and safe home, engage in activities she enjoys, like writing and gardening, and lessen the focus on everything else. Whenever judgmental thoughts arise, she reminds herself of her priorities and the importance of rejecting the societal pressure to appear as though she can do everything. Despite the mess and unread emails, she has found a new sense of peace in choosing to focus on what she truly values: herself, her husband, and her daughters. Embracing the reality of not being able to do everything, she finds joy in the authentic, loving, and nurturing messiness of her family.
