Quote of the Day 🗣
"To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don't need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself. When you are born a lotus flower, be a beautiful lotus flower, don't try to be a magnolia flower.”

Community Members Keeping Pubs Alive 🍻

As hospitality businesses face growing challenges in Australia, pubs are being taken over by community members seeking to preserve an essential part of their small towns. The Australian Hotels Association notes that community ownership of country pubs is a growing trend in areas such as Apsley, Lockington, Boolarra, Sea Lake, Dingee, Nandaly, and Yinnar. This model allows financial burdens, pressure, and risks to be shared among locals, while strengthening the role of pubs as community hubs for celebrations, commiserations, and socializing.
The Railway Hotel in Dingee is one such pub, purchased by a group of over 20 shareholders from the community and reopened after almost two years of COVID-related closure. Community ownership also benefits local businesses as owners source goods from nearby suppliers and producers, bolstering the local economy. In Nandaly, residents pooled funds to renovate and reopen their pub, contributing to community progress and attracting new residents who appreciate the small-town lifestyle and strong sense of community.

🌕 Glass beads on the moon may hold drinking water for astronauts
Researchers have discovered that tiny glass beads on the moon's surface contain potentially billions of tons of water, making lunar exploration more sustainable than ever before. This accessible source of water could be used by astronauts on future lunar missions, as well as provide hydrogen and oxygen. The discovery is crucial for space agencies planning to build bases on the moon, as it opens up new possibilities for utilizing lunar resources.
🍃 Good year for renewables
In 2022, electricity generated from renewables surpassed coal and nuclear generation in the United States for the first time, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The growth in wind and solar energy significantly contributed to this increase, with wind energy declining in cost by 70% and solar power by 90% over the past decade, making renewable energy the most affordable source of new electricity in much of the country.
🏃♀️ 85-year-old Adidas-sponsored athlete
An 85-year-old grandmother, Barbara Thackray, who runs 10k twice a week, has been chosen as one of the faces of a new Adidas advertisement, along with Liverpool footballer Mo Salah. Thackray took up running eight years ago to raise funds for St Ann's Hospice and agreed to participate in the advert in exchange for a significant donation to the hospice.
👟 Shoebox to the moon
A group of around 300 Carnegie Mellon University students built Iris, a shoebox-sized rover that will be the first privately-made American robot and the first student-built rover to explore the moon. The 2 kg (4.4 lbs) rover will fly on a private rocket carrying 14 payloads to the moon, including projects for NASA, and will spend 50 hours on the lunar surface capturing images of moon dust before running out of battery.
