Her Dog Found Her Life-Saving Donor π

Lucy Humphrey, a 44-year-old woman from Caerphilly, found her kidney donor by chance on a Welsh beach. Diagnosed with lupus in 2000 and end-stage renal failure in 2017, Lucy needed a kidney donor to live a certain future. Her Doberman, Indie, persistently approached Katie James, a 40-year-old from Barry, while the two were enjoying a barbecue on Cold Knap Beach. When Lucy mentioned her dialysis treatment, Katie revealed that she had recently joined the kidney donation register.
Surprisingly, Katie turned out to be a perfect match for Lucy, and the transplant took place in October 2022. Both women spent time together recovering in the hospital, and have remained friends since the donation. Now, Lucy can enjoy her life with her partner, Cenydd Owen, and their dogs, while encouraging others to consider kidney donation. Lucy, Katie, and Cenydd now call themselves the "Kidney Gang" and are planning future campervan holidays together.

Parrots That Make Video Calls Are Happier π¦

Pet parrots that make video calls to other birds seem to feel less isolated, according to a study involving touchscreen tablets. Researchers observed the birds engaging in more social behaviors like preening, singing, and playing when they made these calls. Parrots that called other birds most often were the most popular choices.
Dr. Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas of the University of Glasgow, a co-author of the study, noted that video calls had helped people feel less isolated during the pandemic and wondered if the same could be true for parrots. The study, involving over 1,000 hours of footage of 18 pet parrots, suggested that video calling does indeed provide benefits for the birds, as it may replicate some of the social advantages of living in a flock.
The parrots, recruited from users of Parrot Kindergarten, learned to make calls using a tablet device. During the study, they made 147 deliberate calls to each other. Dr. Jennifer Cunha of Northeastern University and co-founder of Parrot Kindergarten, said the birds' behavior mirrored real-life interactions, and all participants valued the experience.
