Debbie Craig, Chris O'Neill, and Noelene Etherden are part of a group of older individuals defying stereotypes by participating in challenging fitness programs like Crossfit. They've embraced a change in attitudes towards exercise in older generations, finding that gym life offers life-changing benefits. Rockhampton gym owner Sean O'Neill runs a program designed to engage those over 55 in Crossfit training, where the social aspect of group classes fosters friendship, community, and accountability.

Stephanie Alley, a senior postdoctoral research fellow from the School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences at CQ University, highlights that structured exercise programs later in life provide numerous benefits, including improved fitness, strength training, and balance and flexibility training. The Australian government recommends incorporating strength training into daily 30-minute cardio sessions for balance and flexibility. Moreover, social support in group classes enhances mental health and cognition, making exercise more enjoyable and increasing the likelihood of long-term commitment.
