Raining Hundreds on the Highway

Also: A chance encounter on a cruise ship, a new push-up world record, and more.

Good morning, friends! 👋

Today, we're celebrating a classic American TV show that has been entertaining audiences for over 30 years. On this day in 1987, "The Simpsons" made its debut as a series of short cartoons on "The Tracey Ullman Show."

We all know the show, but did you know that its creator, Matt Groening, named many of the characters after members of his own family, including Bart (an anagram of "Brat"), Lisa (named after Matt's younger sister), and Maggie (named after Matt's younger sister Margaret)?

Enough about the longest-running American sitcom, let’s get into some good news and uplifting stories for today! 👇

Quote of the Day 🗣

“When I hear somebody sigh, ‘Life is hard,’ I am always tempted to ask, ‘Compared to what?’”

A Chance Encounter on a Cruise Ship 🚢

Eileen Monaghan lost her last link to Ireland when her cousin Nora died in 2014. Eileen and her husband Gerard, who love traveling, would visit Shalvey, in Donegal, Ireland, and meet Nora for a cup of tea on their Irish trips. In 2015, Eileen celebrated her 70th birthday on board Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, and Gerard happened to meet an Irish couple, Paddy and Hazel McEvoy, in the elevator.

The McEvoys were from County Derry, next to Donegal, and Paddy had a cousin in Shalvey who had died the previous year. Gerard asked if her name was Nora, and it was a moment of disbelief when Paddy confirmed that it was. Eileen and Paddy were distant relatives who had never met but were about to be unexpectedly reunited on a cruise ship in the middle of the ocean.

For the remaining two weeks of the cruise, the two cousins and their spouses were inseparable, and they met every day, getting to know each other. They exchanged contact details when the cruise ended, and the Americans invited their Irish relatives to visit them in Connecticut. The McEvoys visited their son in the US later that year and met the Monaghans, and future family get-togethers were planned.

Raining Hundreds On The Highway 💸

A man in Eugene, Oregon, surprised drivers on I-5 by throwing handfuls of $100 bills out of his car window. Colin Davis McCarthy said he was financially stable and wanted to bless others with his money. His act of kindness caused a stir among drivers who stopped their cars to gather the bills, which caused traffic to slow down.

The police located McCarthy's car and warned him about littering and creating potential hazards for other drivers. McCarthy agreed to stop throwing cash, but by then, he had already tossed out thousands of dollars, according to an estimate by law enforcement. Although the police urged the public not to go searching for money on the highway, McCarthy's act of generosity brought joy to many people that evening.
